It's set in Burma/Myanmar with a Karen Christian boy and a Burmese boy as the main characters. It's very good and insightful without being preachy. Also Perkins wrote Rickshaw Girl, about a Bengali girl in Bangladesh where the author's family is originally from.
Also, Eugene Yelchin has a new book out: The Genius Under the Table: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain. It's autobiographical, maybe fictionalized a bit(?), about Yelchin's boyhood in a Jewish family in Communist Russia. The mother is starstruck with Baryshnikov and wants Eugene to become a ballet dancer, but Eugene spends his free time drawing pictures on the underside of the kitchen table. It's funny and also a little sad because the dad, a frustrated poet, dies without realizing his dreams. Anyway, I think you'd enjoy these, since you indicated an interest in both Yelchin's and Perkins' work.
Sherryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04664642293286996220noreply@blogger.com
