Parents' Review Note on Artistic Sensibility

I have been reading up several old Parents' Review articles that aren't online at AO's website yet. I keep coming across little gems I want to share, and I think I am going to start sharing them here.

Sometimes they are gems because they are funny, sometimes because they are amusing, and sometimes because they are startling in just how not in keeping they are wtih today's culture.  Guess which one this is:

"Leeds, April 23rd: Miss Hermione Unwin gave a bright, pleasant lecture to this branch on "The Training of the Artistic Perception in Young Children." She laid stress on the importance of beginning early to surround children with beautiful objects. The nursery should not be a lumber room, to which pictures and knickknacks too ugly for the drawing room are relegated, nor should children be encouraged to think that their little kindergarten mats and other works of art are really beautiful. Miss Unwin made some useful suggestions and her paper was followed by an interesting discussion.

From 1902, a report on a local PNEU meeting.
